SENCo Training Pathway

The training pathway for those wanting to take on the role of setting SENCo has changed in the 2018/19 programme:

SEN Awareness (stage 1)

A 1 day course introducing the role to those who are interesting in taking on SENCo responsibility

It is hoped that this pathway will support those who are considering the role, to 'dip their toe' in the water before fully committing to attending the remaining 2 days training.

An opportunity to see what is involved and make an informed decision before taking a place on a course and deciding that it is not something they are ready to take responsibility for - saving managers the time and expense of training / cover, unnecessarily.

SENCo Core Training (Stage 2) - Those wishing to attend this course MUST have completed the stage 1 course.

This is a 2 day course where delegates will fully explore the SEND (2015) code of Practice, all elements of the graduated approach will be explored (paying attention to documentation required) and how to access further support in order to ensure that all children make the best possible progress

The 'Core' SENCo Training will need to be completed in order for the staff member to feel confident to undertake the role.

Developing SENCo Skills

A 1 day refresher for those who have completed previous core SENCo courses in Lincolnshire (either 3 or 4 days) and want to refine their skills

There may be occasions that the SENCo has been out of the role for a while and feel they need a 'refresher' in order to up-skill themselves - the Developing SENCo Skills course is for you!

SENCo Network Meetings (2.5 hours)

These are held 3 times a year around the County for all those trained in the SENCo role. They are an opportunity to meet with other colleagues working in the role, hear local and national updates, train on specific subject, listen to guest speakers and take part in consultations that may steer changes in the future

Additional support

There are a range of courses available to early years practitioners in this training directory, courses that support with communication, autism, partnership with parents, behaviour management and schemas.

Each year it is advised that additional training is undertaken to support / underpin the SENCo skills, knowledge and understanding.

There are 3 free courses available to support the SENCo role from National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) funded by the Department for Education (DfE)
